Melissa Southerland, New K-12 Intervention Coordinator

Melissa Southerland is a native of Dickson County and graduated from DCHS in 1993.She continued her education at Columbia State Community College and Austin Peay StateUniversity where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She is currently enrolled at Austin Peay State University working towards her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership.

Melissa just completed her twenty-fifth year in education; she spent twenty-three years as a classroom teacher in various grades in the Elementary and Secondary schools. For the past two years, she has served as a TN ALL CORP tutor at Stuart-Burns Elementary School. In March of this year, she filled in as the TN ALL CORP manager for all elementary schools in Dickson County and served as the United Way/Connect Literacy Coordinator for the after-school tutoring program.

Melissa and her husband, Curtis, live in Dickson and have three children: Eli (Cameron), Levi, and Eliza. She comes from a long line of educators, with her husband serving as an art teacher at DCHS and her two youngest children in college for English education and elementary education respectively.

Outside of the classroom, Melissa enjoys crafting, woodworking, designing home decor, and preparing to welcome her first grandbaby this Fall.

Melissa is looking forward to assuming the responsibilities of the K-12 Interventionist Coordinator for the district. By working alongside this county’s excellent community of teachers, she will continue supporting and building relationships to help close student learning gaps and accelerate learning during school intervention time and after-school tutoring programs.
