Ms. Melinda Sullivan Fortner, a native of Dickson County, brings over two decades of experience in education to her new role as Director of Elementary Education for Dickson County Schools.
Fortner's journey in education began after graduating from Dickson County High School in 1996. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Austin Peay University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Her commitment to shaping young minds led her to begin her teaching career at Stuart-Burns Elementary in 2001, where she dedicated a decade to teaching and nurturing students in third and fifth grades.
In 2011, Fortner transitioned to the role of instructional coach within the Elementary Division, serving Charlotte Elementary, Vanleer Elementary, and White Bluff Elementary schools. Her desire to expand her knowledge and expertise soon led her to the secondary division as an instructional coach at Charlotte Middle School in 2012. During this time, Fortner pursued higher education, earning a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Austin Peay State University in 2014.
In 2015, Fortner was awarded the opportunity to return to her alma mater, Dickson County High School, where she served as Assistant Principal for five years. In 2020, she was granted the privilege to return to Stuart-Burns Elementary in the role of Principal, where she has been able to assist in promoting the academic achievement, behavioral development, and overall wellness of students for the past four years.
Now, as Director of Elementary Education, Fortner looks forward to continuing her commitment to student success, staff development, and family engagement across all elementary schools in the district. In her new capacity, Fortner aims to foster a culture of excellence, equity, and innovation, ensuring that every student receives a high-quality education that prepares them for lifelong success.
