Data analysis can show what the students currently know, which allows the teacher to decide how to get them to where they should be to meet their academic needs. HOW that data is used and WHAT data is used is vital to the process. By itself, data cannot solve our education problems; but the collection of data at the standardized, formal, and informal assessment levels gives teachers a way to understand student needs, group students based on strengths and weaknesses, and design (and adjust) lesson plans to ensure that students continuously improve. Equally as important, enabling students to monitor and assume major responsibility for their own learning via their analysis of their own data is invaluable to students’ learning at high levels.
